The focus of the conference was to inculcate the values of societal care and happiness in execution of Management Science, as a part of Structured Management Education for the youth and to elaborate on the happiness index and its importance in the corporate world.
"Happiness Index is a major talking point in today's world. We hosted the seminar to elaborate on the issue on how Spirituality and Happiness Index can bring a positive transition in management education for the youth. We are privileged to have amongst us Dasho Karma Ura, and I sincerely hope that everyone was enlightened to hear him speak on the importance of GNH and the Happiness Index," said Mr. Bikram Dasgupta, Founder and Executive Chairman, Globsyn Group.
Mr. Dasgupta added, "Globsyn Business School believes in Learning Beyond Education and to sustain this philosophy we run the largest MBA students' NGO, Kalyani. Management students of our B-School participate in care for society activities to touch the lives of elderly residents of old-age homes, differently-abled children and adults, and underprivileged sections of the society. These activities not only allow the students to imbibe the practice of giving back to society from an early age, but also help them become dedicated, compassionate managers of the corporate world. We are also planning to initiate the inclusion of GNH in the academic curriculum for future managers."
Leading experts in various fields, including economics, psychology, survey analysis and national statistics describe how measurements of well-being can be used effectively to assess the progress of nations. The happiness index is measured on the parameters of GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption.
World Happiness Report 2017 emphasizes the importance of the social foundations of happiness and importance of happiness in work. Work is a major factor affecting happiness. Since the majority of people spend much of their lives at work, it is critically important to gain a solid understanding of the role that employment and the workplace play in shaping happiness for individuals and communities around the world. Recent research shows that work and employment are not only drivers of happiness, but that happiness can also itself help to shape job market outcomes, productivity, and even firm performance.
Bhutan has been a pioneer for the acceptability of Happiness Index. In the year 1979, the term Gross National Happiness (GNH) was coined by then King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, who stated that the country's development and growth should be measured on the scale of GNH and not in terms of GNP. As Bhutan started getting increasingly engaged with the global community, substantial efforts were made to define, explain and even measure GNH. Indices were created, measurements were recorded and screening tools for government policy were created, and the second phase in the development of GNH saw its real time use in governance. In 2012 GNH won global endorsement when the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Jigme Thinley chaired the first UN High Level Meeting called 'Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm'.
As part of a lengthy and ongoing process of integrating the GNH philosophy into public policy, the GNH Index was developed by the Centre for Bhutan Studies (CBS) to help measure the progress of Bhutanese society. Dasho Karma Ura, President, The Centre For Bhutan Studies (CBS) was the pioneer in promoting and deepening national and global understanding of Bhutan's home-grown development philosophy of Gross National Happiness. He organized the concepts of Gross National Happiness (GNH), formulated the nine regions of GNH, and led the survey conducted in 2010 and 2007. He is also a member drafting the first Constitution of Bhutan (2008 enacted). He has been an active scholar, historian, writer, and even a painter. He was awarded the Red Scarf and the ancient title of Dasho (Knighthood) by the Fourth King Of Bhutan in December 2006, and in 2010, he was bestowed the honour of Druk Khorlo (Wheel of Dragon Kingdom) by the King for his contributions to literature and fine arts.
