NEW YORK, March 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Another family has come forward to voice concerns about an alleged link between Zofran and birth defects (http://www.zofranlawsuit2015.com/zofran-birth-defects/). According to a report from ValleyNewsLive.com on March 17th, a North Dakota woman who was treated with the anti-nausea medication during her pregnancy suspects that it was the cause of her now 2-year-old daughter's heart birth defect. In an interview, the woman discussed how she took Zofran almost daily during the early months of her pregnancy to control nausea and vomiting. The report points out that Zofran was never tested on pregnant women, and only in recent years have studies begun to suggest that the drug might put a developing fetus at risk.
"This report is just the latest to be published that raises concerns about Zofran and serious birth defects. Our Firm has recently received a number of inquiries from families with similar concerns, and we are monitoring developments regarding this drug very closely as part of our ongoing investigation into this matter," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently evaluating potential Zofran cases on behalf of families whose child was allegedly born with a serious birth defect due to pre-natal exposure to this medication.
Zofran and Birth Defects
Zofran is an anti-nausea medication approved to treat post-operative surgery patients, as well as those undergoing certain cancer treatments. The medication is currently not approved for use in pregnant women, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration classifies Zofran in Pregnancy Category B. This indicates that the medication has not been subjected to adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
In July 2014, the Toronto Star published an investigation detailing a number of Canadian women who had given birth to children with serious birth defects after taking Zofran or a generic equivalent during their pregnancies. Among other things, the Star reported that one Danish study detected a two-fold increase in heart defects in babies whose mothers received the medication. The Star also noted a 2011 study which suggested the drug doubles the chance of babies being born with cleft palate.
While Zofran has never been approved to treat nausea and vomiting related to pregnancy, GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of improperly promoting the medication for this use. In 2012, the company agreed to pay $3 billion to resolve illegal marketing charges with the U.S. Department of Justice that involved a number of its medications. Among other things, the company had been accused of promoting Zofran as an off-label treatment for expectant mothers who experience nausea and vomiting.
Parents of children who were born with serious birth defects allegedly related to their mother's use of Zofran during pregnancy may be entitled to file their own claims against GlaxoSmithKline.
