Zipcar Adds Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman to Its Board of Directors
Whitman brings unrivaled experience in online community development and new category creation
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Zipcar announced the addition of former eBay CEO Meg Whitman to its board of directors. Whitman brings to Zipcar deep knowledge of online auctions, e-commerce and payments.
Whitman led eBay from 1998 to 2008. During her tenure, she oversaw the expansion of eBay from 30 employees and $4 million in annual revenue to more than 15,000 employees and nearly $8 billion in annual revenue, as well as a global community of 309 million registered users.
"Meg is a present-day business icon and visionary," said Zipcar Chairman and CEO, Scott Griffith. "During her time at eBay, Meg helped to create and define the category of online auctions, which did not exist prior to her leadership. Clearly, she will be a tremendous asset to Zipcar as we continue to grow and evolve our global car sharing network."
"I am delighted to be joining the Zipcar board at such an exciting time in the company's development," said Ms. Whitman. "I believe passionately in the power of technology and innovation to drive new forms of consumer behavior. eBay transformed how people think about retail by allowing consumers to buy and sell goods through online auctions, and I believe Zipcar is positioned to transform how people think about transportation. In my view, car sharing is one of the most exciting innovations in transportation since the invention of the automobile."
Meg will replace long-time Zipcar investor and board member, Jim Gerson. "Jim's passion for our mission and his exemplary entrepreneurial spirit are represented by his early investment in the company in 2003," said Scott Griffith. "On behalf of our shareholders and board, we are forever grateful for Jim's service to the company and applaud him as a key success factor in the company's growth and strong trajectory over the past seven plus years."
