Fiber-optimized aggregation platform supports next-generation GPON and Active Ethernet services
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) introduced a new aggregation platform today that can support fiber-based triple play service for a large city in a single chassis. With the bandwidth demands of carriers, end-users and enterprise organizations ever increasing, this ultra-high capacity fiber-optimized aggregation platform, called the MXK-F, is the deployment platform of the future for high bandwidth applications. Compatible with current and next generation XGPON, NGPON2 and beyond, the MXK-F can support cloud-based applications and services that have not even been imagined yet.
"The release of the MXK-F platform is a significant milestone in the industry. It allows network providers and telecom carriers to build a network configuration that is already optimized for future advancements that will thrive for many years into the future," said Eric Presworsky, Chief Technology Officer, Zhone Technologies.
Two chassis for the platform were announced today. The MXK-F1421 and MXK-F1419 are the first in a series of new models built for advanced optical networks and to support bandwidth-hungry services. These units are designed for high-bandwidth enterprise systems built on Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON), Passive Optical Networks (PON) and Active Ethernet services. With its advanced architecture and state of the art components, this new platform lays the foundation for Zhone Technologies' future network function virtualization solutions. Additionally, both MXK-F models increase uplink capacity to more than 300 Gigabits per second (Gbps), reduce boot time by 80 percent and support nearly five times the number of connected devices. The units are also optimized to improve overall reliability and availability of the network.
The Polytechnic Institute of NYU has reported on the astounding and accelerated growth of bandwidth demands in its paper "Future Internet Bandwidth Trends." The researchers predict the following bandwidth demands will be required by 20201:
The new MXK-F models are designed in a modular package with customer line card slots that currently support GPON and Active Ethernet. The new MXK-F1421 modular package supports up to 16 customer line cards, and is specifically engineered to set a new standard for GPON ports per square meter in a single rack.
"The capacity of the new MXK-F platform is enough to boggle the mind of even the most progressive information officer. If one were to pair the MXK-F1421 with an eight-Ethernet-port ONT, this platform can technically support more than 294,000 end-users," said Presworsky. "There may not be many people who want to take that leap, but the scenario demonstrates the magnitude of the telecommunications, video, data and other applications that the MXK-F can accommodate."
The MXK-F1419 utilizes the same chassis design as its MXK-F1421 sibling, however it supports 14 customer line cards and mounts in 19-inch racks. Both models can support up to 128-splits per Optical Line Terminal (OLT) port, and a fully-filled 16 line card MXK-F1421 can support more than 16,000 Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at 64 splits in a residential setting. In a FiberLAN environment, up to 130,000 Ethernet ports can be supported by one MXK-F1421 chassis.
