Zarrow Pointe Hosts Discussion On Parkinson's Disease
TULSA, Okla., Dec. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Zarrow Pointe, Tulsa's leading retirement community for seniors, hosted a discussion on Parkinson's disease, challenges and solutions to strengthen awareness about the disease and highlight treatment options to improve patients' quality of life. The event was open to the public, and featured guest speaker Dr. Syed Hussain, Neurologist and Movement Disorder Specialist at the OU Department of Internal Medicine.
According to Dr. Syed, Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder, caused by damage to neurons in the brain that produce dopamine, one of the key neurotransmitters in the brain controlling the body's movement, coordination, attention and wakefulness. "As the disease progresses, a deficiency in dopamine-producing brain cells causes symptoms of Parkinson's disease, which vary from patient to patient, but typically include tremors, postural instability, stiffness and slowness, which can greatly hinder day-to-day activities."
Highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of Parkinson's disease, Dr. Syed emphasized the need for caregivers to work closely together to manage symptoms and improve patients' quality of life. He recommended exercise and physical therapy for patients to improve balance, strengthen muscles and manage rigidity, freezing and falls.
Dr. Syed also mentioned that doctors now have a wide range of innovative treatments, including surgical options for advanced cases that no longer respond to medications. He maintained that while treatment options cannot reverse the progression of Parkinson's disease, they can play a key role in alleviating suffering and enhancing patients' quality of life.
According to Dr. Syed, deep brain stimulation is one such treatment that can help patients regain the ability to dress, eat and walk without assistance, by blocking or altering brain signals causing the disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Addressing the occasion, Jim Jakubovitz, CEO Zarrow Pointe, expressed hope for key stakeholders in healthcare to advance research and identify solutions that can mitigate disease progression. "At Zarrow Pointe, we are passionate about helping our residents experience health, wellness and comfort throughout the progression of life. To achieve this goal, our wellness and physical therapy program specifically integrates the mind, body and spirit to help our residents experience a healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyle."
