A Busy Week Ahead
The market will be very busy next week digesting earnings reports. There will be 947 firms reporting, and 184 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday afternoon, more than 60% of the S&P 500 will have reported.
So far, earnings season has been very strong with over five times as many S&P 500 firms reporting positive surprises than have disappointed. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who's who of U.S. industry, including Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Boeing (NYSE: BA), Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW), Ford (NYSE: F) and Exxon (NYSE: XOM). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business.
There are not a lot of economic reports coming out next week, but there are some important ones. We start out the week with New Home Sales and the Case-Schiller home Price index on Tuesday, followed by New Orders for Durable Goods and the Fed's Beige Book on Wednesday. Thursday brings Pending (used) Home Sales and Initial Jobless Claims.
We finish up with week with the Big Kahuna, the first look at GDP growth in the Second Quarter. Overshadowing everything will be news on a potential deal on raising the debt ceiling as the clock on that ticking nuclear bomb continues to tick down to the August 2nd deadline. If it is not met, pretty much everything else will be irrelevant.
