YouTube Channel Barnacules Nerdgasm Boosts Quality, Speed and Security with Mushroom Networks' Truffle Broadband Bonding™ Network Appliance
The popular technology review show is using Mushroom Networks' Truffle appliance, which aggregates Internet access lines to improve streaming quality and speed and protect against DDOS attacks.
SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mushroom Networks, Inc., innovators of Broadband Bonding™ technology, today announced that YouTube sensation Barnacules Nerdgasm is using the Truffle router to boost the reliability, quality and speed of its channel, which has more than 660,000 subscribers and 64,614,433 views.
Barnacules Nerdgasm was established in 2006 by well-known YouTube personality Jerry Berg. Jerry is a self-proclaimed professional nerd and an ex-Microsoft software developer who specializes in 3D printing, programming, robotics, technology, reviews, gaming, metro tech and more. With hundreds of thousands of subscribers and millions and millions of views, Barnacules Nerdgasm cannot afford slow connectivity and performance glitches, or outages caused by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
"Barnacules Nerdgasm YouTube channel is all about technology, so it is critical that there are no technology troubles," said Jerry. "My audience continues to grow, and the viewers are always asking for more content. I needed a solution that delivers seamless service, high speed and top quality, and Mushroom Networks' Truffle was the best option to do that job."
Mushroom Networks' Truffle appliances leverage virtual leased lines (VLLs), intelligent software defined WAN orchestration and Broadband Bonding technologies. The appliance enables cost-effective and self-healing Internet access by bonding, load balancing and orchestrating up to four (or optionally as many as eight or sixteen) Internet lines to increase performance and up-time of applications and services that run over the Internet. Several T-1, DSL, cable modem, MPLS, metro-ethernet or fiber services from different ISPs can be aggregated to provide increased bandwidth.
Jerry implemented Truffle to replace his single cable modem, which struggled under the challenge of uploading anywhere from 4-8 Gigabytes of data for each show—a process that often would take several hours. If the single cable modem went offline, uploads would be interrupted, causing further delays. In addition, because of the channel's growing popularity, it became a target for DDoS attacks that could cause major disruptions or even bring down the channel.
Jerry is currently using Mushroom's Truffle to aggregate one DSL and two cable modem lines. In addition, he has an LTE wireless failover that he can combine with the DSL and cable modem lines or use as a standalone line, in case all the wired lines fail. This set-up has proved to be much more cost-effective then a dedicated fiber optic line in terms of throughput, and delivers near 100 percent reliability.
Jerry also can determine the type of traffic flows through his multiple broadband connections by manually manipulating his IP addresses, an ability he did not have with a single cable modem. This is helping him more effectively combat DDoS attacks while also ensuring better video and audio, especially for live streaming events in 1080p.
Jerry recently upgraded the Truffle appliance he had to the new Truffle E model, which supports up to 1Gbps. The aggregation over the Internet access lines is done even for a single session, providing the full aggregate speed every time. The Truffle E includes a number of optional features, such as support for application centric bonding tunnels such as VOIP Armor and master/slave redundant High Availability (HA).
