Youth Find Ways to Improve Texas Communities

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB) announced that seven Texas Service-Learning programs will receive a total of $442,775 for service-learning projects addressing issues from access to higher education to environmental responsibility.

The seven programs are:

• $35,409, Liberty Goes Green Initiative, Liberty High School, LIBERTY
• $38,016, Invasive Species Removal, Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition, HOUSTON
• $99,350, Heart of Texas – TEEN CERT Collaborative, Education Service Center Region XII, WACO
• $60,000, Street Smarts, Desert View Youth Impact, EL PASO
• $85,000, Concordia Preserve Study, Concordia University, AUSTIN
• $25,000, Youth Diversity Initiative, Boys and Girls Clubs, FORT WORTH
• $100,000, Breaking Barriers Through Success, Southwest Key Programs, AUSTIN

More than 1,100 grant requests totaling nearly $80 million were received nationwide. All awardees will be recognized on February 22, as part of International Corporate Philanthropy Day.

"It was extremely difficult to narrow it down to just these seven since Texas saw a growth of 152% in grant applications received this last round. As a Board we review proposals and chose the programs that will ultimately have the greatest impact on their community, the most significant need, and are led by youth," said Greg Weatherford, Senior Youth Advisory Board member for Texas.

Each program will be celebrated on February 22, as part of International Corporate Philanthropy Day. Special demonstrations will be held at the individual sites listed above on the 22nd or on a future date to highlight each project. Youth Aiding Youth

The YAB is unique because it consists of 30 board members from across the country, ages 17-20, who oversee a $5 million grant budget. The Board reviews proposals for student-led service-learning projects and decides which proposals to fund.
