Young People in Particular are Annoyed by Queues at the Cash Register - Germans are Open to Paying by Smartphone
TNS Infratest survey: Great interest in versatile mobile payment solutions, additional functions - and mobile payments at gas stations
LUXEMBOURG, July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
German consumers are annoyed by the disadvantages of conventional payment methods - and are open to the advantages of making payments with their smartphone: This was one of the findings of a survey carried out by TNS Infratest on behalf of Yapital, the first European cross-channel payment solution. Especially younger people are critical of traditional payment methods, particularly handling cash: 83 per cent of 14 to 29 years old are annoyed by queues at the cash register, the detour to the ATM bothers 35 percent of 30-39 year-olds.
But conventional methods are also not above criticism when it comes to pay in online shops or on invoice: 43 per cent of all respondents between 30 and 39 years have already been irritated by complicated transfer procedures. 44 percent of 14-to 29-year olds are for example bothered by the laborious task of inputting data at the online checkout. No wonder, then, that 28 percent of consumers could be won over by mobile payments, providing a faster payment process compared to other methods.
But there is also great interest in the additional functions of mobile payment methods:
42 percent of smartphone owners and 29 per cent of all those surveyed also mentioned that additional information, such as always having an up-to-date insight into expenditure incurred, provided compelling added value to paying by smartphone. Versatility is also desirable feature: 39 percent of smartphone owners and 29 percent of all respondents would like to make mobile payments everywhere - in-store, online, and when paying on invoice.
Germans have clear favorites when it comes to the preferred locations for paying by smartphone: One in three (33 percent) of those surveyed would like to make mobile payments at gas stations, and this rises to 43 per cent among smartphone owners - as every second German now has a smartphone, this amounts to more than 17 million people. Public transport users would also like to make mobile payments: 33 percent of all respondents and 45 percent of smartphone owners would like to pay for their bus and train tickets using mobile phones. And 30 percent of all respondents as well as 41 percent of smartphone owners would like to use their mobile phones at the cash register in supermarkets and drugstores.
"We are very pleased with the results of the survey. They exceed our expectations - which were high, because we experience ever day how positively people respond to an alternative payment solution, if it offers them real added value," says Nils Winkler, CEO of Yapital. "The results confirm the Yapital concept, particularly due to the high acceptance of additional functions and the frequently mentioned wish to be able to make mobile payments not only at the cash register, but also online and when paying on invoice."
