Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer Survivor to Host Inaugural Blue Hope Bash Denver in Support of Young Onset Cancer Research
More Than 250 Coloradans to Attend
DENVER, March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Blue Hope Bash, the premiere fundraising event series of national nonprofit Colorectal Cancer Alliance, takes place in Denver on March 2, during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Colorectal cancer survivor and chairperson of the Bash, Kim Kronenberger, was inspired to establish this event in her hometown to increase awareness after a stage-III rectal cancer diagnosis at 47 years old. Together with her team of young-onset cancer survivors, she will host the Blue Hope Bash Denver to save lives in their own backyard.
"We are transforming the way we think about young-onset colorectal cancer," Kronenberger said. "The Alliance has committed to investing $3 million in young-onset colorectal cancer research during the next three years, some of which will be spent right here in Colorado at local research institutions."
More than 135,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2018, according to the American Cancer Society, and more than 1,700 of them will be Coloradans. Young-onset colorectal cancer, affecting anyone under 50, is on the rise, and scientists don't know why.
"Colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer in the United States and the second-leading cause of cancer death," said Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. "Young people, in the prime of their lives, are being diagnosed more often and at a later stage than any other group. The question we've been working tirelessly to answer—and the question every group needs to be asking—is why?"
Blue Hope Bash Denver aligns a local community of passionate advocates for an inspirational evening to celebrate survivorship and remember loved ones. The event will feature a welcome reception, notable VIP's, dinner, and live and silent auctions. Funds raised during this event will support the Alliance's goal of investing $10 million in critical research, including $3 million in young-onset colorectal cancer research.
