Young ASEAN Leaders to Visit United States on YSEALI Study Tour
YSEALI members from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Singapore to take part in three-week tour focused on environmental technology and civic engagement
WASHINGTON, July 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cultural Vistas will welcome five young Southeast Asian leaders, representing Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, and Singapore, to the United States for a three-week professional tour, beginning Monday, July 27 in Washington, D.C.
This regional exchange initiative, funded by a grant through the Embassy of the United States in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and administered by Cultural Vistas is part of President Obama's Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI).
The tour represents the third phase of the YSEALI Generation EARTH Regional Exchange, which began with virtual learning exercises and a four-day workshop this past April in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
During the workshop, 72 young leaders from all 10 ASEAN member states worked in teams to develop project ideas addressing a transnational environmental issue. View more from the workshop at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpKxR9SWW7I
The five participants earned this opportunity by way of their team's winning proposal to develop Log This!, a youth-focused mobile application allowing users to track and submit, to their governments, cases of deforestation and illegal logging.
The three-week tour includes visits to five U.S. cities, beginning in the nation's capital with subsequent stops in New York City; Burlington, Vermont; Duluth and Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle.
While stateside, the group will meet with government and educational institutions, app developers, tech startups, community organizations and NGOs to explore environmental management best practices, and learn about resources to implement their project plan and amplify it to reach a greater audience.
In each host city, the five participants will take part in various cultural and educational activities, including sharing an evening of home hospitality with an American host family.
Cultural Vistas staff has designed the tour and will travel with the group for the duration of the program.
