Yorkshire Terrier Remains NYC's Top Dog

NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Once again, the Yorkshire Terrier defied the nation by surpassing the Labrador Retriever to remain NYC's top dog according to the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2011 ranking of the most popular dogs in the U.S.

"The French Bulldog made strong gains on its quest to overtake the Yorkshire Terrier as top dog in the Big Apple," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson.  "This easy to maintain breed jumped two places to land as third most popular and looks like he has his eye on the top spot."

Notable trends in New York City's top breeds:

• New to Manhattan's top 10 are the Golden Retriever (up six places to number eight) and the Havanese (up three places to number 10).
• While the Golden and Havanese made strong gains in their quest for the top spot, the Maltese dropped out of the top 10 altogether (down two places to eleventh).
• Local top 10 tumbles last year included the German Shepherd (down one place to fourth), Bulldog (down one place to fifth), and Shih Tzu (down one place to seventh).

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today.  The Beagle made big news by overtaking the beloved Yorkshire Terrier to become the third most popular dog breed, while the Golden Retriever advanced from the fifth to the fourth most popular dog breed.  The Rottweiler also made big news by unseating the Shih Tzu – which had been in the top 10 since 2000. But fans of the Labrador Retriever need not fear: the beloved Lab remained the champ – a spot it has now held for 21 consecutive years – thanks to its well-earned reputation for playfulness and loyalty, and its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog.
