WAUKESHA, Wis., Sept. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The York-Poquoson (Virginia) Sheriff's Office announced today that it will equip its entire fleet of 59 vehicles with Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 automated external defibrillators (AEDs), joining a growing list of U.S. law enforcement agencies to select the next-generation AED to help protect the public and fellow officers.

Cardiac Science, a global leader in AEDs, introduced the Powerheart G5 earlier this year. It is the first FDA-cleared AED to offer a combination of automatic shock delivery, variable escalating energy, and rapid shock times. The device enables anyone, from a first-time user to a professional rescuer, to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) incident.
"You never know when or where someone is going to need this life-saving device," said Sheriff J.D. "Danny" Diggs. "Our Uniform Patrol Division is out on the road, and very often our field deputies are the first responders to the report of a cardiac arrest incident. We've saved several lives with AEDs, and consider them essential equipment for vehicles."
York County, part of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area, includes dense residential areas, military facilities, wooded parkland, and a water park. The residential population of more than 65,000 is increased by substantial heritage tourism to Yorktown in York County and nearby Williamsburg.
"It makes sense that an easy-to-use AED with bilingual capabilities was the choice for the sheriff's office," said Al Ford, Cardiac Science General Manager and Senior Vice President of Sales / Marketing. "We designed the new Powerheart G5 to meet the needs of police and other public-safety first responders. It's tough enough to be taken on the road in a squad car and light enough to be easily portable in a rescue situation."
The new AEDs will replace the agency's existing devices, many of which had become outdated.
"We wanted to make sure that we would get the benefits of the latest in AED technology," said Sheriff Diggs. "We chose the Powerheart G5 AEDs because they're user friendly and fully automatic. In addition, they have a battery-performance guarantee and bilingual capabilities for Spanish."
The Powerheart G5 is designed for ease of maintenance. It conducts daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests and has a highly visible indicator to confirm the device's Rescue Ready® status. It comes with an 8-year warranty and a 4-year performance guarantee on its Intellisense® medical-grade non-rechargeable batteries.
