York County Second Grader Named PA Farm Show Detectives Grand Prize Winner; Ag Secretary, Turkey Hill Host Ice Cream Celebration Party
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A York County second grader today received a surprise ice cream party for her classmates for winning the grand prize in the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show Detectives program.
Agriculture Secretary Russell C. Redding surprised Kylee Sierer, daughter of Wendy and Jim Sierer, with frozen treats for the entire South Mountain Elementary School. The party was hosted by the Farm Show Detectives program sponsor, Turkey Hill.
"The Farm Show Detectives program is a fun, interactive way for younger visitors to learn about Pennsylvania's agriculture industry during the Farm Show," said Redding. "Seeing Kylee's surprise today was a true testament to the importance and excitement of the program. We thank Turkey Hill for its generosity in supporting a program that teaches the next generation about our state's number one industry."
Sierer will also receive a year's supply of Turkey Hill ice cream as part of her winnings – 52 coupons for any 1.5 quarts of ice cream. Turkey Hill also donated drinks and 560 ice cream cups to the South Mountain Elementary School.
An excellent educational opportunity for school groups, Farm Show detectives used a special map to guide them through 20 learning stations throughout the complex. Each station offered an educational and interactive experience ranging from lessons about the state's hardwood industry to discovering how food is produced.
More than 1,300 detective entry forms were collected during the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show, but thousands more participated. While most participants were from Pennsylvania, students from Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina also entered.
The 2011 Pennsylvania Farm Show is set for Jan. 8-15. The largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, the Farm Show features nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 285 commercial exhibitors. Learn more at www.farmshow.state.pa.us.
