YMCA of the East Bay Appoints New Executive Director to the Urban Services Division
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- YMCA of the East Bay is proud to announce the appointment of Tovi Scruggs, M.Ed. as the new executive director of the Urban Services Division. In this role, Scruggs will be responsible for leading the programs, services and operations the YMCA's most urban populations in East & West Oakland, as well as several comprehensive after school programs in Oakland Unified School District. Scruggs also will be responsible for leading the development of partnerships with community leaders and volunteers to extend services and programs for youth, teens, adults and seniors to broader segments of the community.
Scruggs comes to the position after more than ten years of entrepreneurship where she was founder and executive director of ASA Academy & Community Science Center, a non-profit private school and science center focused on youth of color throughout the Bay Area. Earlier, she was assistant principal at Royal Sunset Continuation School in San Lorenzo Unified School District. Scruggs has specialized in educational leadership and community development, with a particular focus on establishing and implementing effective partnerships to create measurable impacts on youth development. Using comprehensive approaches, Scruggs has focused on engaging with community partners and volunteer leaders to identify critical needs and provide the necessary services and resources to respond to those needs.
Scruggs is excited to lead the Urban Services Division in greater outcomes for youth, family engagement activities, increased membership and programming, bridging the academic achievement gap, creating a new board of directors, and expanding the Y's work with East Bay residents. Overall, Scruggs is determined to create a national model of urban service programming and youth development that aligns with the strong principles of the YMCA.
Scruggs earned her two bachelor's degrees at the University of California, Berkeley, and her master's in Education at Mills College.
