YipTV predicts continued TV innovation despite Aereo Ruling
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., June 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the Top (OTT) upstart YipTV contends that Aereo's Supreme Court loss will not dramatically weaken innovation in emerging television technologies. On Wednesday, the nation's highest court ruled against Aereo and its clever mini antenna arrays, which allow customers to receive over the air television broadcasts to digital devices through cloud and Internet connections.
"While this decision was tough to hear in some technology circles, it was not unexpected," said Michael Tribolet, CEO of YipTV. "In today's environment the broadcasters simply need to be paid for their content. It's just that simple."
Nonetheless Mr. Tribolet's company foresees large shifts in the way televised content is consumed in the United States by 2020. "OTT providers like YipTV will continue to gain viewers and momentum because people want to choose their own content, and they want to control how and when they watch it. Ultimately the American consumer will be the supreme authority when it comes to where and how paid media is consumed," he said. "We are seeing preferences shift away from traditional providers to lower cost alternatives along with more segmented niche audiences. This will make OTT the better choice for both advertisers and consumers because both have more control over how they spend their money."
