NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The final stop of the XL Catlin Art Prize Exhibition will go on view in New York at the New York Academy of Art in Tribeca, November 21-29. Launched in December 2017, the Prize is the nation's first and most prestigious student art competition devoted to figurative art.
Having travelled to San Francisco and Chicago, the exhibition wraps-up its inaugural year in the U.S. with the announcement of the first and second prize winners on November 28. The winners have been chosen by renowned artists Nicole Eisenman, Eric Fischl and Amy Sherald, and Jennifer Schipf, Senior Vice President for Fine Art & Specie insurance at AXA XL, the official sponsor of the Prize.
Ms. Schipf, at AXA XL said, "After ten successful years of the Prize in the U.K., we're excited to extend AXA XL's commitment to supporting the next generation of American artists with this first U.S. Prize. We have been thrilled with the response to the exhibition in San Francisco and Chicago and are looking forward to announcing the winner in New York."
The XL Catlin Art Prize focuses on the reemergence of figurative art in the contemporary art world. The Prize was developed in partnership with the New York Academy of Art, which is devoted to the promotion of figurative art, and boasts an Advisory Board of 22 major art schools across the U.S., including Yale School of Art, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia University School of Arts, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Pratt Institute and Bard College.
The Exhibition
The travelling exhibition is comprised of the top 40 student artists who were shortlisted from over 700 entrants nationwide. The first prize is $10,000 and the exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, featuring an essay by painter Kurt Kauper. The 40 shortlisted artists were selected by an Exhibition Jury comprised of Ian Alteveer, Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jennie Goldstein, Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum, Laura Hoptman, Curator at the Museum of Modern Art, and Kara Vander Weg, Director at Gagosian Gallery.
The shortlisted artists, 20 young women and 20 young men, are enrolled at 24 different schools and range in age from 19 to 27. The artists hail from four different countries and 19 states across the U.S. Six schools had two artists make the cut: Hunter College, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Rhode Island School of Design, San Francisco Art Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Three shortlisted artists are from Yale University, four from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and five from the New York Academy of Art.
In an innovative twist, the Prize also includes an Audience Award, selected via Instagram. All 40 works were posted to XL Catlin Art Prize's Instagram account and the work with the most "likes" wins $1,500. In this way, the XL Catlin Art Prize includes both a juried winner, selected by artists, and a popular winner, voted on by the public. The XL Catlin Art Prize Audience Award will be the first prestigious art prize conducted via the social media platform.
