Wren Recommends Schools Participate in National Preparedness Month to Increase Readiness for Disaster
>> Review of Common Pitfalls K-12 Schools Experience When Facing Emergencies Improves Real-Time Reaction, Leadership Skills and Safety
ATLANTA, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of National Preparedness Month in September, Wren has released a new Bird's Eye View advisory to help schools understand five common pitfalls in emergency planning.
"Schools may always consider themselves on 'high alert' for a serious security incident such as an active shooter, especially after the violence experienced by Virginia Tech or Columbine," said Jeff Floreno, director of operations and security strategy, Wren Solutions. "However, one of the major pitfalls schools experience is not evaluating other critical risks that have an equal or even greater chance of occurring than an active shooter on campus. The lack of preparation and practice for those critical risks compounds the likelihood of a disastrous outcome if an incident were to occur."
The five key elements schools should evaluate to avoid such pitfalls for emergency preparedness include the ability to:
- Single-handedly respond to a crisis without the help of law enforcement during the initial phase of an emergency situation;
- Evaluate the full gamut of potential emergencies – from a major flu outbreak to a chemical spill – that could occur, which may not be limited to on-campus violence;
- Practice drills ahead of time to better prepare the entire staff to lead during an emergency;
- Manage an influx of crowds in the case of a disaster, such as parents, media and emergency responders; and
- Provide life-saving and comfort supplies from first aid kits to flashlights and blankets.
