LOS ANGELES, July 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Super League Gaming, the world's first in-theater interactive video game league, is bringing gamers together to play side-by-side in movie theaters across the country for an unprecedented gaming event. This summer, the startup will take over 80+ movie theaters in 25 major cities across the nation for their Super League Gaming Summer Tour, and will stop at select Florida theaters July 6 through 8. Super League has partnered with the nation's three largest movie theater chains -- Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Theatres, and Cinemark Theatres, as well as luxury chain iPic Theaters -- to transform cinemas into interactive gaming arenas for kids and gamers alike.
Super League Gaming aims to create a new way for gamers to play, combining aspects of the increasingly popular eSports category with a traditional league play environment. Gamers will immerse themselves in an engaging, face-to-face experience as they compete for league championship titles playing the popular game Minecraft, with other titles available in the upcoming months.
This summer, Super League Gaming will host a coast-to-coast, 25-city tour that will run from June 15 through August 26 to introduce their unique concept and get the word out about league gameplay. Continuous 6-week sessions, that function much like a soccer or little league, will start on September 14.
"I think video games are great in the way they can capture a child's imagination, but imagine adding a real-world social element to that which brings the whole thing to life in a positive way," says Super League President and COO Brett Morris. "That's why we created Super League Gaming. We're just a group of dads who want to help kids connect with each other and develop social bonds as they play and engage in the games they love. We like to think of it as little league for the digital era."
Each 100-minute session is comprised of both game play and social elements, with gamers building in teams, competing in battles, and enjoying free time to interact with other gamers as they work together to strategize and climb the international leaderboard.
Gamers play in first-person on their laptops at each event while a third-person bird's-eye view of a customized Minecraft world is projected on the movie theater screen. This unique, all-encompassing perspective uses Minecraft's open source API in order to merge all players onto a single screen as they compete side-by-side for an immersive gameplay experience within the theater.
"Cinemark is very excited to be working with Super League, as more and more of our theatres are being recognized as ideal venues for gamers to play and engage in eSports," says Cinemark VP, Head of Marketing & Communications, James Meredith. "With our large screens, incredible sound, cutting-edge technology and extremely comfortable seats, our multiplexes provide a gaming experience that cannot be replicated."
"We know kids are excited about playing video games, but now we want to bring another layer to the experience that pushes their engagement even further," says Super League Co-Founder and Chief Visionary John Miller. "There's no reason why such a common pastime has to happen locked away in kids' rooms. Moms, dads, siblings... everyone really gets involved once they walk into one of our theater events. You can feel the energy in the room."
The Summer Tour brings Super League Gaming to over 80 theaters in the U.S. for $20 per event, followed by 6-week league sessions in the fall where gamers play once a week for $120 per session. To learn more about Super League Gaming and buy tickets, visit: www.SuperLeague.com
