LOS ANGELES, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Super League Gaming, the world's first in-theater interactive video game league, brings gamers together to play side-by-side in movie theaters across the country. The startup is taking over 80+ movie theaters across 28 major U.S. cities for their Super League Gaming Summer Tour and is stopping at select New York area theaters beginning Monday, July 6th. Super League has partnered with the nation's three largest movie theater chains -- Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Theatres and Cinemark Theatres, as well as luxury chain iPic Theaters -- to turn theaters into interactive gaming arenas for kids and gamers across the nation.
With the popularity of eSports on the rise, Super League Gaming aims to bring gamers and their teams together in movie theaters across the country for a new way to play and compete. In this immersive, face-to-face experience gamers will vie for league championship titles playing the popular game Minecraft, with other game titles to come in the fall.
The coast-to-coast, 28-city tour is running from June 15 through August 26 to introduce the concept of Super League Gaming and get the word out about league gameplay, which starts with consecutive 6-week sessions on September 14.
"Times have changed, so now instead of every kid going to a sporting league after school, many kids are gravitating toward the world of video games," says Super League President and COO Brett Morris. "We wanted to help kids celebrate their love of video games while connecting with each other in a safe and engaging environment. Super League Gaming is essentially the little league of the gaming world. We're bringing a social element to gameplay that really isn't offered anywhere else."
Each Super League Gaming event is comprised of a 100-minute session that incorporates both gaming and social interaction. Gamers will build with their teams, compete in battles, and enjoy free time to move within the theater to socialize with other gamers as they strategize together and work to climb the international leader board.
Super League Gaming changes the gameplay experience by projecting a third-person 'world' view of Minecraft on the theater screen while gamers play in first-person on their own laptops. This all-encompassing perspective takes advantage of Minecraft's open source API in order to merge all players onto a single screen as they compete side-by-side within the theater for a wholly unique gameplay environment.
"We're thrilled about the new way in which Super League Gaming is able to use our facilities to help kids connect," says Cinemark VP, Head of Marketing & Communications, James Meredith. "We combine the latest technology with plush accommodations for an immersive entertainment experience perfect for gamers. Plus, they get to see their game happening right on the big screen."
Originally released in 2009, Minecraft has increased in popularity in recent years thanks to notable gamers like CaptainSparklez, a YouTube celebrity with over 8.6 million subscribers, who is working closely with Super League Gaming and is set to appear at select events throughout the Summer Tour.
"Our goal is to create a positive, collaborative environment in which gamers can connect and form their own kind of recreational team," says Super League Co-Founder and Chief Visionary John Miller. "We were just a group of dads who saw this opportunity for our kids, and we wanted to really bring it to life. It's great to see them building their social skills as they work toward a common goal together. Teamwork is essential for kids, and Super League Gaming facilitates that learning in a way that's adapted for a digital world."
The Summer Tour will bring Super League Gaming to over 80 theaters in the U.S. for $20 per event, followed by 6-week league sessions in the fall where gamers play once a week for $120 per session. To learn more about Super League Gaming and buy tickets, visit: www.SuperLeague.com
