World's Airline Industry Leaders Prepare for Penton's Air Transport World Awards Gala
NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Leaders of the global air transport industry will gather in Washington, DC next month to celebrate this year's winners of Penton's Air Transport World 41st Airline Industry Achievement Awards.
The 2015 winners include Southwest Airlines (Airline of the Year), Air Astana (Airline Market Leader of the Year), Ethiopian Airlines (Regional Airline of the Year); Spirit Airlines (Value Airline of the Year); Lufthansa (Eco-Airline of the Year); Boeing (Eco-Company of the Year); London Heathrow Airport and Star Alliance (Airport of the Year) and L-3 Link Simulation & Training (Aviation Technology Achievement). Additionally, the individual award for Leadership Excellence will be presented to former TSA Administrator John S. Pistole.
Airline and aerospace CEOs will attend the Awards and have expressed their excitement at being among the winners.
"On behalf of the people of Southwest Airlines, I am delighted that our airline has been selected by ATW as Airline of the Year," Southwest Airlines chairman, president, and CEO Gary Kelly said. "This is a prestigious honor, and I am proud for all of our employees. They have done an extraordinary job transforming Southwest over the past decade, which culminated in a record and historic 2014 performance."
Air Astana President Peter Foster said, "Air Astana is delighted to become the first ATW Award winner from Central Asia and the CIS. Financial performance, international standards of safety, passenger service and operational efficiency have always been our watchwords. They have enabled Air Astana to become Central Asia's clear leader in just 12 years. I am now proud to be able to collect the ATW Market Leadership Award for 2015 on behalf of all of my 4300 colleagues."
Ethiopian Airlines is this year's Regional Airline of the Year. CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said, "It is a great honor to receive this prestigious recognition from one of the leading global travel media. Ethiopian continues to register remarkable success, despite the very challenging operating environment in Africa with traffic rights restrictions, infrastructure limitations, much higher jet fuel price than in the rest of the world, and now disease outbreak.
"We owe this award, first and foremost, to the patronage of our customers, who continue to fly with us in record numbers."
Boeing is the recipient of the 2015 Eco-Company of the Year Award. Among the company's many eco-aviation efforts, it has a 787 Dreamliner dedicated to exploring and developing eco-technologies. "The ecoDemonstrator is focused on technologies that can improve airlines' gate-to-gate efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise," Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Ray Conner said.
The ATW awards are among the most coveted and valued honors in the airline industry. They will be presented by ATW Editors at a gala dinner in Washington, D.C. on February 25th, 6:00 – 9:30 pm at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
