World Water Day PDX Slated for March 21 & 22
Funds from Walk for Water and Concert Series go to Water for All
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, March 21, Portland Global Initiatives, the nonprofit arm of Portland Roasting Coffee Company, will host the second annual World Water Day PDX Walk for Water at the World Trade Center, located at SW First and Salmon Streets in downtown Portland. And on Monday, the same organization will bring the World Water Day PDX Concert Series to the Aladdin Theater, located at 3017 SE Milwaukie Avenue in Portland. Proceeds from both World Water Day PDX events will go to Water for All, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean water to families in sub-Saharan Africa.
World Water Day PDX begins on Sunday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at the World Trade Center Plaza with live music and educational exhibits illuminating the worldwide water crisis. Participants can also watch one of two screenings of the 2008 award-winning water documentary, FLOW, in the World Trade Center Auditorium.
Starting at 1 p.m., for a $20 donation, Walk for Water participants will walk a 3-mile course (the average distance traveled in sub-Saharan Africa to obtain water) on the Eastbank Esplanade alongside the Willamette River. Various stations along the way will provide water to drink, and water for buckets which participants are encouraged to fill up and carry back to the starting point.
World Water Day PDX events are sponsored by Portland Roasting Coffee Company with organizational help from Portland State University's Capstone course on Millennium Development Goals. Walker registration fees, combined with local sponsor donations, will go to Water for All to build several water pumps – at a cost of $14,000 each – in Tanzania, where water is a vital element in the production of coffee, one of the area's few commodities.
On Monday, March 22, the World Water Day PDX Concert Series will happen at the Aladdin Theater. World music will be the resounding theme at this second annual musical event headlined this year by 3 Leg Torso, and with supporting acts Obo Addy, and Loveness Wesa and the Bantus Band. Doors open for the all-ages event at 6 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance through Aladdin Theater or Ticketmaster, and $20 at the door.
