Workers at Red Rock Resorts' Boulder Station Vote to Unionize says UNITE HERE
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over Labor Day weekend, workers at Boulder Station Casino & Hotel voted to be represented by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE. The union filed for an NLRB election on August 15, and employees in the union's bargaining unit at Boulder Station voted on September 2 and 3. Of the 532 who voted, 355 (67%) voted for the union.
Boulder Station is the first of Station Casinos' properties in Nevada to unionize, and the union expects contract negotiations to start shortly. Workers at a Station Casinos-managed tribal casino in Northern California ratified their first union contract last year.
At the large casino-hotels owned and operated by Station Casinos in Las Vegas, including soon-to-be-acquired Palms, workers have been demanding a fair process to decide whether to unionize. After the Boulder Station vote, the union has continued to call on Station Casinos to agree to a fair process at its other Las Vegas properties so that workers can decide whether to unionize free from management interference, intimidation, bullying, and litigation.
Boulder Station is a subsidiary of Station Casinos LLC, which is partially owned by Red Rock Resorts, Inc., which raised $534.1 million in an IPO in April. The 180-day IPO lock-up period for executives, directors, and pre-IPO owners such as Deutsche Bank, which owns approximately 16% of the company, expires in 39 days (as of September 15).
Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 represent over 57,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino-hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas.
