Women's roller derby Championships begin Nov. 8
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The best women's flat track roller derby teams in the world will compete for the sport's top honor in the 2013 Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Championships Nov. 8-10 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The WFTDA Championships bring together the most highly trained and committed skaters and officials from WFTDA member leagues to display the "Real, Strong, Athletic and Revolutionary" game play that pushes the limits of the sport worldwide. Whether participating on the track, cheering in the stands or watching online, the WFTDA Championship tournament will provide everyone who loves roller derby an opportunity to witness the most anticipated match-ups of the year.
"The Championships represent the pinnacle of our sport. While only a select number of our member leagues participate, the entire WFTDA community of skaters and fans is eagerly anticipating the talent and athleticism that will be on display on Championships weekend," said WFTDA Executive Director Juliana Gonzales.
Twelve teams will compete for the Division 1 Championship title, including the first ever Championships appearance by a non-U.S. team, the London Rollergirls. To be eligible for Championships, they first had to rank highly enough to qualify for the WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs and then place first, second or third in one of the four playoff tournaments, which took place in September.
The WFTDA Championships weekend will also feature the first ever WFTDA Division 2 Championship and Third Place games, featuring the first and second-place finishers in the two Division 2 Playoffs, held in August.
