Women in Localization Launches Catalunya Chapter
Capitalizes on Vibrant Global Economy and Talent Pool in Catalunya
BARCELONA, Spain, Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Women in Localization (WL), the leading professional organization for women in the localization industry, is pleased to announce the launch of the Catalunya Chapter (WL CAT).
Catalunya ("Catalonia" in English) is a coastal Mediterranean location in Southern Europe. Historically a trading nation, Catalunya's economic success is partially attributed to its ability to connect to the rest of the world.
Its global business landscape includes more than 6,500 incoming firms operating in the region. Catalan exports in 2014 equaled 60,194M EURO, breaking a historical record, represent 30% of Catalan GDP. Primary export sectors include chemicals, automotive, food and beverage, textile and fashion, pharmaceuticals and machinery. One in five Catalan firms export and 34% of Catalan exporting companies (16,000) do so on a regular basis, with 65% of exports within the EU.
As a result, there are more than 40 translation and localization companies currently established in Catalunya. This is a key factor for Women in Localization selecting this vibrant corner of the world for its next expansion.
"The mission of Women in Localization is to create an open, collaborative forum where women can network, share expertise and experiences, and help each other move forward in their careers. We are very excited that this mission is being taken up by women all around the world, and the Catalan chapter is becoming the newest member of our global WL family," states Eva Klaudinyova, a co-founder of Women in Localization and Executive Board member in charge of chapter management and international expansion.
According to Anna Navarro Schlegel, co-founder of Women in Localization, Executive Board member, and a Catalan native herself, "Catalunya is a great hub for companies to go global. Catalans have always been leaders in the Mediterranean trade and a top engine for southern Europe. We are very happy to see Catalan women leading the first group of its kind in the area."
Maria Kania-Tasak, the Manager of the Women in Localization Catalunya Chapter, goes on to state, "When I first joined the global organization of Women in Localization and saw that they were networking, supporting each other and hosting thought-provoking professional events in California, I felt that our Catalan region could definitely use something similar. For our first year, we are planning events such as career development in localization, machine translation, games localization, and so much more."
The inaugural informal event of the Women in Localization Catalan Chapter was held in Barcelona in September. This networking event, planned with the help of Assistant Chapter Managers Muntsa Cuchi-Robinson, and Veronica Cairioni, gave all members a chance to meet and discuss future plans for the Chapter.
