Women Impacting Public Policy Announces Migraines Awareness Project

SAN FRANCISCO, June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In conjunction with National Migraine Awareness Month, WIPP is pleased to join the effort in raising awareness about this debilitating disease with our Migraine Awareness Project. Migraines are not simply "bad headaches." They are a serious neurological disease.

According to recent data, 36 million Americans suffer from migraines. One in every 4 U.S. households is affected by migraines. Among those sufferers, women are disproportionately the victims of this disease. The fact is, three times as many women suffer from migraines as do men.

In the workforce, the numbers are staggering: $13 billion is attributed to the loss of productivity in American businesses.

Despite the prevalence and abundance of migraine sufferers seeking treatment, there are still millions of sufferers who do not seek treatment due to misdiagnosis or lack of awareness about prevention and control of migraines.

Funding for migraine research remains shockingly low, equal to only around $0.40 per migraine sufferer.

"The impact of migraines is far-reaching, and too many Americans are not getting the right diagnosis or are not seeking treatment when there are many options available to help them manage their condition," said Barbara Kasoff, President and CEO of WIPP.
