Wisconsin Virtual Academy Students Log On for First Day of School
State's Largest Online Public School Welcomes Students Back September 2
McFARLAND, Wis., Aug. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Students at Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA), a tuition-free online public charter school that serves students in grades K-12, will return to classes September 2 for another year of learning, inspiration and growth.
"We can't wait to welcome all of our new and returning families to WIVA," says Dr. Leslye Moraski Erickson, Head of School for WIVA. "Here's to a successful year ahead."
WIVA has been serving students in grades K-12 across the state of Wisconsin since 2009. Students attend school full-time, online, and use the internet to access the engaging, award-winning K¹² curriculum, which offers a variety of electives and AP® courses. The school combines state-of-the-art online teaching techniques with Wisconsin-licensed teachers to create individualized learning plans for each child.
Because the program meets students where they are academically, it is ideal for all types of learners, including advanced learners, struggling students, athletes, performers, those seeking relief from bullying and students simply looking to get more out of their education.
"Our teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming school year, and we're happy to see so many kids and families coming out for our back-to-school events," Erickson says. "We're excited that so many families across Wisconsin have chosen to partner with us."
To help get new students prepared for a successful start to the school year, the staff is conducting virtual orientation sessions for all grades. WIVA will also be hosting back-to-school picnics around the state for new and returning families, a great opportunity for families to meet WIVA staff and connect with each other face-to-face.
With the first day of school approaching, WIVA teachers and staff also gathered in Madison for two days to prepare for the upcoming year.
Kaleb Shorey, a talented young actor from Green Bay, is entering his senior year at WIVA this fall. "As an actor, I need a flexible schedule, and with WIVA I get one," he says. "I love the curriculum. It's very advanced and you can work at your own pace."
Choosing online education doesn't mean students sacrifice social opportunities. Wisconsin Virtual Academy provides regular opportunities for face-to-face socialization. Social events held throughout the school year include picnics, bowling, and outings to venues such as waterparks, museums and baseball games. In addition, the school offers activities such as online clubs, student council, prom and graduation just like traditional schools.
