BURLINGAME, Calif., Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In its recently released report, Exact Ventures found the wireless packet core market, including evolved packet core (EPC), grew more than 20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 versus the same quarter in 2010. This growth resulted primarily from worldwide sustained demand for mobile data services. North America, where mobile broadband demand and smartphone penetration are particularly high, was a significant contributor to the overall market growth. The EPC market more than doubled compared to the year-ago quarter, as LTE-based networks and services continued to launch and gain subscribers in the fourth quarter.

"The wireless packet core and policy infrastructure is a critical element of mobile networks that enable operators not only to manage the massive influx of mobile data and signaling traffic, but also better serve their customers and grow revenues by more efficiently directing content traffic and creating applications and content," stated Greg Collins, Founder and Principal Analyst at Exact Ventures. "As WiFi becomes an increasingly large portion of mobile traffic, certain elements of the packet core, such as PDN gateways, are expected to be the fastest growing segment of the EPC, growing to $2.6 billion in 2016," added Collins.
During the quarter, Cisco and Ericsson gained share in large part to continued, sustained growth in data traffic and smartphone signaling in North America.
