Wireless LAN Enterprise-class 802.11ac Market Grows 40% Sequentially, According to Dell'Oro Group

Wave 2 802.11ac Shipments Expected to Stimulate Ethernet Switch and Wireless LAN Sales in 2015

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A recently published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, revealed the Wireless LAN (WLAN) market grew eight percent in the third quarter 2014 versus the year-ago period. Enterprise-class 802.11ac-based radio access points grew a robust 40 percent versus the second quarter 2014.

"As of 3Q14, new 802.11ac devices represent only six percent of the installed base of all Enterprise-class access points. Next year, we expect two important stimuli to drive 802.11ac further. First, so-called Wave 2 devices that support higher speeds than the current Wave 1 devices will hit the market in the first six months. Second, in the US market, government funding to expand Wi-Fi networks in schools and libraries, called E-rate, is expected to be released," said Chris DePuy, Vice President of Wireless LAN research at Dell'Oro Group. "We also expect Wave 2 devices to cause a mini-upgrade cycle for higher-speed Ethernet switching infrastructure with speeds that will likely include recently introduced 2.5 and 5 Gbps, as well as 1 and 10 Gbps, which have been available for several years."

In the third quarter 2014, the top three vendors in the combined Enterprise-Class and Outdoor Mesh Nodes category were Cisco Systems, Aruba Networks and Ruckus Wireless.
