Winter Storm Jupiter: Travel Insurance No Longer Available for Latest Winter Storm
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Winter Storm Jupiter is expected to become a major ice storm, impacting the Plains, Midwest and Northeast. As travel conditions worsen, leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, says it's too late to buy travel insurance coverage.
Why too late for coverage?
Winter Storm Jupiter was officially named on January 11, 2017. After that date, it is considered a known event, meaning no new travel insurance policies can be purchased to cover the storm.
Who can be covered?
Travelers who purchased a policy prior to January 11 may be covered if their trip is impacted by the storm, including travel delays and cancellations. Insured travelers affected by Winter Storm Jupiter should contact their provider's 24-Hour Emergency Assistance department as soon as possible.
What is covered?
The following benefits may be applicable for travelers who purchased a policy prior to January 11:
Cancellations due to weather: The Trip Cancellation benefit reimburses prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses if a flight is delayed for at least 12-48 hours, depending on the policy.
Delays due to weather: The Travel Delay benefit reimburses costs for meals, accommodations and local transportation if a flight is delayed for 3-12 hours.
Missed connections due to weather: The Missed Connection benefit reimburses the additional travel expenses incurred to catch up to a trip after a 3-12 hour weather delay. Some policies with Missed Connection coverage can also reimburse the costs for meals and accommodations during the delay.
When to buy?
Travel insurance policies must be purchased before a winter storm is named in order to provide coverage for any losses directly related to that storm.
