Winter Park Construction (WPC) Completes $12 Million Renovation, Garners Unprecedented Award Nomination for Lakeland Housing Authority
ORLANDO, Fla., June 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of a national campaign to preserve and enhance public housing using Federal stimulus money, Winter Park Construction (WPC), (www.wpc.com), an expert in the design, construction and renovation of multi-family housing projects, has completed a contract for the $12 million refurbishment of two of the Lakeland Housing Authority's (LHA) low income housing projects, Paul Colton Villas and Bonnet Shores.
That specific renovation has resulted in multiple awards for the LHA including two National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials National Awards of Merit and a nomination for a National Award of Excellence in Green Building. If awarded the National Award of Excellence in Green Building, it would make history as the first multi-family housing authority development to be registered "green" in Florida. In addition, the Florida Green Building Coalition is in the final stages of reviewing the project for Gold certification.
Originally built in 1981-1982, Bonnet Shores and Paul Colton Villas offer approximately 72 and 75 two-, three- and four-bedroom duplex units; all of which were in need of major renovations. The Lakeland Housing Authority was provided $13 million in Federal stimulus money to assist with renovation efforts.
The floor-to-ceiling renovations in both properties included new cabinets, plumbing, lighting fixtures, flooring, central heating and air systems, window and roof replacements, as well as landscaping, curb and paving repair. "It was almost like a new build. The interiors were completely demolished with WPC stepping in to provide floor-to-ceiling renovation work while implementing green building techniques and materials during the process," said Mickey Duclos, WPC Project manager for the housing projects.
In March 2011, residents began moving into their renovated communities which also include renovate common areas such as fitness centers, community center, playground, volleyball court library and business center.
