CHICAGO, Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- FoodService Director magazine has collaborated with Technomic to produce the first-ever Winsight Noncommercial Trends Forecast. The report, which can be found on FoodServiceDirector.com, forecasts six ways the noncommercial foodservice landscape will change in the next 12 months.
FSD and Technomic's findings—which include menu trends as well as operational predictions—reflect the noncommercial industry's continued resourcefulness for finding new approaches to ever-evolving circumstances and ensuring the overall wellness of the nation's schools, colleges and hospitals.
"Foodservice directors will have the daunting challenge of delivering innovative and exciting meals that meet customers' demands for transparency, adventurous flavors and convenience—even in the face of mounting operational challenges around labor, food costs and competition from restaurants," says Kelly Killian, director of the foodservice content group for Winsight. "In 2017, the trends that will have legs in noncommercial are those that offer solutions to all of these issues and more."
Highlights from Winsight's 2017 Noncommercial Trends Forecast include:
New-age vending. Demand for 24/7 foodservice and better quality fare paired with escalating labor expenses and staffing challenges are giving way to modern vending solutions. We'll see more noncommercial vending machines dispensing freshly made juices, burritos, salads and even pizza slices.
A fresh take on local partnerships. Foodservice directors' first foray into the local movement involved teaming up with farmers to source fresh ingredients. Expect to see more advantageous partnerships with local chefs, restaurant concepts and nonprofits over the coming year, particularly in the healthcare and C&U segments.
Generational disruption. As members of Gen Z join millennials at college, millennials take up a larger chunk of the workforce than Gen X, and baby boomers step into senior living for the first time, FSDs are struggling to juggle sometimes conflicting tastes and preferences within their operations.
