Awards presented at fourth annual women + tech holiday party, honors remarkable contributions from women in the PDXWIT community
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- PDX Women in Technology (PDXWIT), the nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and connecting professional women in the Portland tech community, today is announcing the winners of its first-ever annual Women in Technology Awards. The awards were presented at the PDXWIT Women + Tech Holiday Party at OMSI last night.
"PDXWIT is only possible because of the contributions and commitment of its community members. Their donation of time and expertise in a variety of areas makes our community richer and more vibrant," said Megan Bigelow, co-founder and president, PDXWIT. "There is power in connection, and I can't think of a better way to end the year than by celebrating the women who deepen those connections for all of us."
The winners of the Women in Technology Awards are:
The Best Contributor Award goes to Katharine Nester, chief product and technology officer at Ruby Receptionists. Katharine was chosen by the panel of judges because of her work to increase opportunities for women in tech. She has worked tirelessly this year to expand positions for women at Ruby Receptionists, for example, increasing the female staff by 50 percent. She also contributes to App Camp for Girls and participates in the PDX Mentorship Program and is often a panel member at PDXWIT events.
"I am incredibly honored by this recognition from PDXWIT. I have been so inspired and impressed with the amazing people I've met through the organization – both those who are forging new paths in the tech industry, as well as those who support and encourage women in tech. Contributing to the community at large and on a one-on-one basis has broadened my own views and has given me a treasured opportunity to support others by sharing my knowledge and experience." - - Katharine Nester.
The Best Speaker Award goes to Tanya Crenshaw, senior software engineer at New Relic.
The winner in this category was determined upon completion of a lightning "run off" among finalists. Participants included Crenshaw; Kathy Lee, IT specialist at BPA; and Elizabeth Robillard, VP of partnerships at Lytics.
"I'm grateful to Megan and her team for building a tech community in which I can feel a sense of belonging and make a contribution." - - Tanya Crenshaw
"When I was changing career paths and industries, PDXWIT was an incredible place to meet people and hear their stories. It helped me figure out where my place in a new industry was, in a warm and professional environment. I am so glad for the personal and professional connections I have made here in the last 4 years." - - Kari Fass
"I'm a huge fan of all that PDXWIT does in the Portland community for women in Tech. The events and speakers are always top notch and I was thrilled to be able to participate in their line-up of speakers in 2017." - - Elizabeth Robillard
