IN SEARCH OF ELEGANCE, NOT PERFECTION
Currently responsible for 70% of the world's Malbec vineyards, Argentina's wine production is at an all-time high. Malbec wines are praised for their refined quality, balance and distinct characteristics that tell a unique story of each vintner and their corner of the world. These micro-regions, in turn, display a level of sophistication in determining the identity of each Malbec.
THE HISTORY OF MALBEC | A CULTURAL EXPORT
When one thinks of Malbec, Argentina immediately comes to mind: this undeniable cultural association can be contributed to the internationalization of this product and is commended by the unique and cosmopolitan style of this varietal. The Malbec varietal is the most widely cultivated grape in Argentina, covering 41,301 hectares (102.057 acres) of land. Over the past decade, exports of Malbec have increased by 375% resulting in prolific growth for the local Argentine economy.
Following the phylloxera outbreak that decimated French vineyards, a renewed interest in the varietal emerged. In 1853, Michel Aimé Pouget (1821-1875), a French agronomist, was appointed by President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento to carry out the management of the Agricultural Quinta de Mendoza modeled after the wine industry of France.
It was on April 17, 1853 where the first Quinta Normal and Agricultural School was inaugurated with the support of the governor of Mendoza; Pedro Pascual Segura. Over the span of the late nineteenth century, the influx of Italian and French immigrants to Argentina largely contributed to growth in this industry. Argentina's wealth of terroir resulted in a wine that would surpass its origins. With continued support from the people and the government of Argentina, this grape represents not only a cultural revolution but also a champion of Argentine ingenuity.
