Wilton Manors Officials Will Celebrate Mickel Field Redevelopment With Groundbreaking On October 6, 2014
WILTON MANORS, Fla., Sept. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The start of a new and improved Mickel Field (2675 NW 7 Ave., Wilton Manors) will begin on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 6:15 p.m. when city officials break ground to commence the park's redevelopment.
City commissioners have approved $1.4 million for the repurposing of Mickel Field which will include numerous improvements including; an asphalt walking/jogging tail, fitness zone with shade structure and benches, lighting, large pavilion with stage and courtyard, estate style fencing on the east and west end of park, shelter with restroom, beach volleyball court, the renovation of the existing building to serve as an activity room, a police substation/recreation staff office and enhancements to the large baseball/softball field. The small baseball/softball field will be removed to make way for the new amenities. About 100 native trees will be added to increase shade throughout the park and there will be enhanced food catering options: commercial type oven warmer, refrigeration and ice machine.
The funds allocated are a combination of grants, including the Recreation Trails Program and Tree Trust Fund, impact fees, general budget monies and a bank loan.
With Wilton Manors' changing demographics, Mickel Field had become underutilized and a safety concern. City officials solicited feedback from residents by hosting focus groups and listening to comments made during city commission meetings, many of which spoke in favor of the repurposing of Mickel Field to meet the modern needs of the community. In addition to the residents gaining an active park, the city will be taking a step towards improving Powerline Road as a whole.
"The investment in repurposing our park system has countless residual benefits, which we have already begun to experience such as strengthening and uniting our communities, improving health, happiness, recreation opportunities, connectivity, cultural venues and so much more," said Mayor Gary Resnick. "It was a gem when I first moved into this city and it can be again. This is going to benefit the whole city."
The demolition begins Wednesday, October 1, 2014. The facility will be closed to the public during construction, which is estimated to be completed in the Summer of 2015. Residents, business owners and members of the media are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on October 6, 2014 at 6:15 p.m. at Mickel Field. Refreshments will be provided immediately following the ceremony.
