In 2011, a Wilton product design team went directly to the source – groups of decorators in a variety of settings including at-home, in-store, in a professional studio and at The Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionery Art. Cake decorators with all levels of experience – from hobbyists to entrepreneurs – were observed and asked for input.
"Issues were identified, the charge was made, and the result is the Decorate Smart products," says Siler. The new product line features more than 20 items. Examples of the design process and resulting products follow.
The Challenge: Transporting a Finished Cake
"The team was told that there's nothing more nerve-wracking than moving a finished decorated cake," says Siler. With that, the charge became to create the best mode of travel for decorated cakes and goodies. One product result is a complete redesign of a cake caddy. The Ultimate Trim 'n Turn Caddy ensures extra stability and includes a presentation-ready decorating platter alleviating the need to move the cake. What's more, the dome was made even taller to accommodate 4-inch cakes with large decorations, and a non-skid surface on the dome rim to provide a stable working stand for the turntable.
The Challenge: More Space and Time for Creativity
"We saw that space, or lack of space, was a major issue for decorators," says Siler. Designers made it clear they wanted more efficient tools that allowed them more time to focus on creativity. This issue is addressed in the re-designed decorator "tackle box" now known as the Decorator Preferred Decorating Caddy. To save space, the removable lid stacks under the base, and the top tray is completely removable. Space organization also includes icing tip holders, equipment compartments and adjustable dividers. There is also room for the newly designed Icing Smoother that helps to create perfectly smooth cake tops and sides. For easy storage, the new Icing Comb Set – three combs that provide six different decorative textures, from ridges to swirls and waves – snap into each other.
The Challenge: Simplify Organization and Build in Easy Clean-Up
"We watched decorators carrying multiple grocery bags tumbling with supplies," says Siler. One big result: the new Decorator Preferred Carry-All Tote designed for the fashion-forward decorator on-the-go. Created with a keen attention to details – from the length of the handle for shoulder comfort to the grease-proof fabric for easy cleaning – this new tote has a compartment for every need, including notebooks or tablets for inspiration.
All new Decorate Smart products can be easily identified by the Wilton signature color: purple. Purple signals a touch point on the new products, from handles to snap closures and grips. The new Decorate Smart products are available at craft and hobby stores, as well as at www.wilton.com.
