Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati to Expand Intellectual Property Practice

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the premier provider of legal services to technology, life sciences, and growth enterprises worldwide, today announced that Jasemine Chambers has become Of Counsel at the firm. She joins the patents and innovation counseling practice after nearly 25 years at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), most recently serving as deputy administrator for the Office of Policy and External Affairs (OPEA). Chambers will be based in the firm's Washington, D.C., office.

During her tenure as OPEA deputy administrator, Chambers assisted the administrator in providing policy advice to the director of the USPTO on matters relating to IP protection and enforcement and IP-related trade issues, including proposed legislation and international activities. She also oversaw the day-to-day operations of the organization and served as a standing member of the USPTO's Policy Council and Management Council. Her duties included working with OPEA's China team to focus on emerging IP concerns and related issues in that country, such as improving China's IP environment for market access by U.S. right holders. Earlier at the USPTO, among other roles, Chambers served as director of Technology Center 2900, where she oversaw the examination of design patent applications, and of Technology Center 1600, where she supervised the examination of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and organic chemistry patent applications.

A former law clerk to Chief Judge Randall R. Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Chambers has served on detail assignments at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Department of State's Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement, and the USPTO's Office of Intellectual Property Policy and Enforcement. Prior to joining the USPTO, Chambers conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Duke University Medical Center, and was a senior staff fellow at the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health. She received her J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 2001, a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics from Florida State University in 1982, and a B.A. in biology from Agnes Scott College in 1977.
