SOPA/PIPA Opponents Hope Facebook, Google Join Reddit Blackout
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- EIN News -- Touted by supporters as tools that will help the U.S. go after "foreign" rogue websites, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) bills are facing growing opposition.
Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Ron Wyden, the most vocal opponents of SOPA and PIPA in the U.S. House of Representatives & the Senate, have championed alternative legislation, the Open Act.
But they both agree that in order to defeat the SOPA and PIPA bills, effective grass-roots opposition is necessary. Issa and Wyden speak about educating the public and Congress.
Other people are coming up with more radical solutions. Reddit, a popular community news-sharing site, is planning to protest against the bills by shutting down normal operations on January 18.
And a lot of critics hope that other opponents of the legislation will follow suit, most notably Facebook, Google and Wikipedia.
