Will Pornography Rule Private Domains or Will Online Gaming Get its Own Domain as Well?
GIBRALTAR, August 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has recently granted the pornography industry with a domain dedicated solely to pornographic sites. Analysts are wondering if the same thing will happen in the online gambling industry as well.
Last week, ICANN assigned the pornography industry with a new suffix specifically for pornographic sites. The grouping of adult oriented and sites with sexual content under the domain of .xxx may indicate a similar future for online gambling sites such as http://www.casino.com. The decision was made in hopes that it would help users get better results when searching online.
The decision stirred mixed feelings on both sides of the coin. Some porn distributors were happy to welcome the concept while others felt that it put a stigma on the porn industry by separating them from the rest of the online community. In spite of this, online casino sites are considering the idea of a unique domain as well, hoping that it will give them the same impact as governments and schools by using .gov and .edu.
