Will Eliminating the Mortgage Interest Deduction Demolish the American Dream?
WASHINGTON, Feb. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Congress considers President Obama's just-released budget — which includes provisions to cut the mortgage interest tax deduction — Hudson Institute will host Rep. Ruben Hinojosa and a panel of distinguished experts to examine the implications for Americans' housing.
The President's proposal comes after the recommendation of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to eliminate the deduction, a bold conclusion drawing support from across the political spectrum. Yet neither the Commission nor most commentators have stopped to assess the implications of such a major change in the tax laws, and the President's budget simply announces his cuts to the deduction without any discussion.
Owning your own home has often been considered a central aspect of the "American Dream." How would repeal of the mortgage interest deduction affect homeownership for middle-income American families? What would be the social implications of repeal? How much tax revenue would repeal actually produce?
