Wildlife Acoustics Announces its Song Meter™ SM2 GPS Time Synchronization Option
Allows multiple Song Meter field recorders to synchronize to within one millisecond enabling spatial localization of recorded sounds
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- (Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting) -- Wildlife Acoustics, the leading supplier of acoustic monitoring systems for endangered and threatened wildlife species around the world, today announced the availability of the new Song Meter SM2 GPS Time Synchronization Option. The ability to precisely synchronize time across multiple units is essential for spatial localization to determine the source of recorded sounds.
Available as an option on both the SM2 acoustic recorders and the SM2BAT ultrasonic recorders, the SM2 GPS Time Synchronization allows the Song Meter to synchronize its clock to the precision time maintained by GPS satellites. The option includes a GPS interface card and a waterproof external GPS receiver with a 5 meter cable that connects to the Song Meter (in lieu of the external sensor port).
"Some of our customers need to identify the source of recorded sounds to count individuals, study animal behavior, and even locate poachers," said Ian Agranat, President and CEO of Wildlife Acoustics. "By creating an array of precisely synchronized recorders, the source of a sound can be determined by triangulation after measuring when the sound reaches each of the microphones. We also plan to offer software in the near future to automate this process".
The option is a "plug and play" solution. If the GPS antenna is attached, the SM2 automatically synchronizes to the GPS clock before the scheduled recording starts. The recording is automatically adjusted for the duration to maintain synchronization. Additional set up is not required.
The option is available for an additional US$599.95 with Song Meter SM2 acoustic or ultrasonic recorders.
