Whitebox Advisors Announces Third Annual Whitebox Prize Competition for Best Financial Research of 2013
Investment firm renews $25,000 top prize for greatest industry contribution
MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- After the second year of its annual research prize contest, Whitebox Advisors, LLC, a $2.5 billion, Minneapolis-based investment adviser, launched its third annual competition, seeking 2013's best published contribution to the art and science of investing.
As with previous years, the goal of the Whitebox Prize is to draw attention to outstanding research among the thousands of papers published each year. Whitebox searches for papers that have the potential to enhance the performance of the investment industry, improve returns to capital for investors, and help a broader audience to better understand financial markets and investing in them.
"At Whitebox Advisors, we have always placed a premium on ideas, especially bold ones backed by powerful research. New ideas benefit investors – within our industry and beyond - and we believe, now more than ever, it is crucial to find innovative approaches to getting the most out of our capital," said Andrew Redleaf, Whitebox Advisors' Founder and CEO. "The last winning paper by AQR's Tobias J. Moskowitz, Yao Hua Ooi, and Lasse Heje Pedersen, 'Time Series Momentum,' illuminated the power of momentum in position selection and that knowledge can ultimately help investment professionals deliver for their clients."
A letter announcing this year's competition and rules will be sent to more than 5,000 industry professionals, as well as academic institutions, who are encouraged to submit their own research or nominations for the research they believe deserves the grand prize. Up to 10 finalists may be chosen for additional prizes.
"We are very much looking forward to finding and publicizing what we believe to be the industry's best research again this year," Redleaf added. "As part of our commitment to promoting creative thought and investigation, Whitebox already funds important original research through Yale University's behavioral finance program. Still, there is an astounding amount of important but largely unnoticed research coming from academic and industry sources every year. When all of us in the industry – academics, money managers, and financial journalists – share that research, we can all potentially perform at a higher level."
Contest submissions can be made through Whitebox Insights (www.whiteboxinsights.com) or by sending an email to [email protected]. Submissions will be accepted until January 30, 2014 and winners will be announced in the late spring of 2014. The research from the 2013 winners and runners up will be posted to Whitebox Insights in the coming weeks.
