Whitebox Advisors Announces Second Annual Whitebox Prize Competition for Best Financial Research of 2012
$25,000 top prize for greatest contribution to art and science of investing
MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual investor conference today, Whitebox Advisors, a $2.3 billion Minneapolis-based investment advisor, launched its second annual competition to find the year's best published contribution to the art and science of investing. Whitebox collected the top ten papers of 2011 into its annual anthology being released today at the conference.
The goal of the Whitebox Prize is to highlight outstanding research that may be overlooked among the thousands of papers published each year. The firm searches for papers that have the potential to enhance the performance of the investment industry and improve returns to capital for investors and the nation.
"Some of last year's contest submissions, especially the winning paper by Robert Stambaugh and Lubos Pastor titled, 'Are Stocks Really Less Volatile in the Long Run?,' made us stop in our tracks and look at some crucial issues in a new light," said Andrew Redleaf, Whitebox Advisors' Founder and CIO. "At Whitebox Advisors, we have always placed a premium on fresh, bold ideas, especially when backed by powerful research. New ideas benefit our industry and our country and, given the challenges facing our country, it is crucial to find innovative approaches to getting the most out of our capital."
A letter announcing this year's competition and rules will be sent to more than 5,000 industry professionals who are encouraged to submit their own research or nominations for the research they believe deserves the grand prize. Up to 10 finalists may be chosen for additional prizes.
"We are very much looking forward to publicizing the industry's best research again this year," Redleaf added. "Whitebox already funds important original research through Yale University's behavioral finance program, but there is an astounding amount of important but largely unnoticed research coming from academic and industry sources. When all of us in the industry – academics, money managers, and financial journalists - know more, we will all perform at a higher level."
Contest submissions can be made through Whitebox Insights (www.whiteboxinsights.com) or by sending an email to [email protected]. Submissions will be accepted until January 30, 2013 and winners will be announced in the spring of 2013.
