WASHINGTON, July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National League of Cities commends President Obama's announcement today to assist cities and towns in preparing for the impacts of climate change and building more resilient infrastructure to protect communities. The announcement follows the recommendations of the State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and will help cities adapt to the impacts of climate change while providing much-needed economic benefits.
"This will help strengthen our communities by preparing them for changes in climate while building a 21st Century economy and world-class infrastructure," said Clarence Anthony, executive director of the National League of Cities.
Specifically, the announcements related to disaster preparedness and resilience are forward thinking approaches that will improve recovery from future extreme weather events, help local communities assess and plan for region-specific vulnerabilities, and create best practices around mitigation and adaptation. These programs will help cities plan and rebuild stronger and smarter, and in the long run will save taxpayers money.
The National League of Cities, through its Sustainable Cities Institute, is committed to offering online tools, city profiles, convenings, and training to support these and other climate resilience initiatives. While climate change is a global issue, cities are on the front lines of the fight to mitigate and adapt to its effects.
