White & Case Expands White Collar Capabilities With New Partner in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its market-leading white collar capabilities with the addition of Matthew Miner as a partner in Washington, DC. Miner joins the Firm from the US Senate, where he was minority staff director on the Committee on the Judiciary and where he had also served as counsel on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
"We are delighted to be able to offer Matt's expertise to our clients and to add his talents to the Firm's global white collar capabilities," said George Terwilliger, head of White & Case's Global White Collar Practice and former Deputy Attorney General of the United States. "More so than ever, business interests are frequently intertwined with legislative investigations, oversight hearings and other congressional proceedings, especially where parallel enforcement proceedings are under way. As a senior Senate staff veteran, Matt's experience adds expertise concerning the inner workings of the federal legislative establishment that national and international clients will find highly valuable."
In addition to Miner's staff director position on the Senate Judiciary Committee, he has served as the committee's minority deputy staff director and senior counsel and as minority chief counsel of its Administrative Oversight and the Courts Subcommittee. Miner has also held the positions of majority chief counsel for crime, terrorism and oversight for the Senate Judiciary Committee and as majority counsel for the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
As part of his Senate staff committee responsibilities, Miner has handled key criminal law and national security legislation such as the Fair Sentencing Act, reauthorization of the Patriot Act and efforts to revise the honest services fraud statute following the US Supreme Court decision in Skilling v. United States. He also helped manage numerous high-level confirmation hearings, including the Supreme Court nominations of Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor and the US Attorney General nomination of Eric Holder.
In 2007, Miner served as the lead minority counsel in one of the largest congressional oversight investigations in recent history. In that role, Miner deposed many high-level administration officials, handled a dozen congressional hearings and served as the key minority staffer on questions relating to committee subpoenas and contempt authority.
On Miner's departure from public service, Senator Jeff Sessions in an April 14, 2011, tribute on the Senate floor described Miner as "one of the most trusted members of my staff ...." Senator Sessions noted that when Miner analyzes an issue, "I know he has intelligently considered it and has fairly reported the pros and cons," adding that Miner "is widely known and respected by Members and staff on both sides of the aisle ...."
Prior to his Senate committee service, Miner was an Assistant US Attorney in the Office of the US Attorney in the Middle District of Alabama, where he served as corporate fraud coordinator and managed the largest corporate fraud investigation in the district's history.
"Matt's background in Washington and as a former prosecutor brings new capability and depth to our white collar practice," said David Hille, head of White & Case's Disputes Practice in the Americas. "In the highly regulated business community in the United States, especially in banking, telecommunications, energy and health care, Matt will be a key resource for clients with complex enforcement and legislative issues."
Miner is the latest addition to White & Case's Global White Collar Practice. His arrival follows the hirings of counsel Charlie Monteith in London in January and partners Ken Caruso in New York and Michel Beaussier and Isabelle Fenayrou-Degas in Paris in September 2010.
White & Case's Global White Collar Practice provides counsel to the world's most established and respected businesses and business leaders when faced with domestic and international civil and criminal investigations, enforcement actions and related proceedings. The practice also regularly advises multinational corporations and their executives on a wide-range of corporate governance, compliance, due diligence and other risk-assessment matters.
