Where Does Your NFL Team Stack Up? Portfolio.com Reveals the Top Football Franchises
2010 Super Bowl Champs Edged out of the Top Spot by the Dallas Cowboys
NEW YORK, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Portfolio.com — the national news site for small and mid-sized business (SMB) executives — is kicking off the 2010 football season with its list of top franchises in the National Football League. According to the ranking, the Dallas Cowboys beat the 2010 Super Bowl Champs, the New Orleans Saints, to take the top spot. The study used data from all 32 NFL franchises in a variety of categories including record, average win/loss margin, playoff performance, average home attendance, percent of available seats occupied, and estimated value of the franchise.
"Every football fan thinks their team is the best, but when it comes to winning and creating value for owners, some teams are clearly better than others," said J. Jennings Moss, editor of Portfolio.com. "We took a variety of factors into account with this study, and were surprised to see the huge disparity between the haves and the have-nots in the NFL. There is a clear line between the top and bottom feeders on this list."
Coming in third behind the New Orleans Saints are the 2009 Super Bowl Champs – the Indianapolis Colts. The two teams with the lowest record (9-7) to make the top ten are the New York Jets (#5) and the Baltimore Ravens (#9). Also included in the top ten are the New England Patriots (#4), the Philadelphia Eagles (#6), the Green Bay Packers (#7) and the Minnesota Vikings (#8). The San Diego Chargers came in at #10, tying the Saints for the second best record while having the most open seats per game.
Portfolio.com's analysis also found the on-field gap between the NFL's top teams and bottom teams to be significant. While the bottom 10 teams—which included Detroit Lions (#32), Oakland Raiders (#31) and St. Louis Rams (#30)—won only 45 of their 160 regular season games, the top 10 teams in the rankings won 113 of their 160 regular season games. The same can be said for attendance. The Dallas Cowboys, which opened the brand new Cowboys Stadium last season, had an average attendance of 89,756—more than double what the last-ranked Oakland Raiders had (44,284).

"While the Saints were clearly number one on the field, posting an impressive 13-3 regular-season record and taking home the Super Bowl trophy, Dallas also had a remarkable year with an 11-5 record and the opening of its mammoth new stadium," said G. Scott Thomas, a nationally-recognized demographer who created the analysis for Portfolio.com. "It was very difficult for a team to top the first-ever Super Bowl win for the Saints franchise, but the Cowboys managed to do it."
