When it Comes to Valentine's Day Spending, How Does Your State Stack Up?
From $0 to $267, Valentine's spending varies wildly by state according to a survey by OppLoans
CHICAGO, Feb. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Just how much are Americans spending on Valentine's Day? A new survey from the financial sleuths at OppLoans found that, on average, U.S. residents shelled out about $33.64 on holiday-related romantic gestures. But how much you spend on your sweetie will depend on your age, gender, and where you live.
Survey data found that men in New Mexico spend the most on their valentines, with an average of $267 per V-Day date - that's a lot of surf 'n' turf! On the flip side, if you're looking to get spoiled on February 14, stay away from Alaska and North Dakota: Survey data revealed that, on average, both men and women in those states spent a whopping $0 on Valentine's Day! And before you start chastising your friends up north, just know that 44 percent of ALL survey respondents also said they spent nothing on Valentine's Day. Hey, homemade presents count for something, right?
When it comes to the gender breakdown, men spent an average of $41.38 on their partners, while women averaged around $25.85. Unsurprisingly, people ages 18 to 24 spent the least amount of money during the sappiest time of the year, clocking in an average of $20.94. The highest spenders by age? Those between 55 and 64, who spend an average of $39.51 keeping the flame of love a-burning.
