When "Friends" can prove unfriendly: NSU Shepard Broad Law Center helps lawyers and businesses navigate social media
FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla., Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Developed by attorney and author Ethan Wall, J.D., Nova Southeastern University's (NSU) Shepard Broad Law Center, has begun offering a course which meets the challenges posed by the proliferation of social media in law and workplace environments.
"Social Media and the Law," examines the impacts of websites such as Twitter and Facebook on criminal and civil lawsuits especially in the areas of family law, employment law, defamation, privacy, and intellectual property. Students will also learn how these new technologies impact lawyers, and the collision between lawyer ethics and the social media as it applies to marketing strategies for lawyers, law firms and clients.
Ramifications of "Friends", "personal profiles" and "testimonials" are placed in perspective, as well as other online practices, and local and out-of-state ethics applications. Businesses and attorneys will learn how to develop a coherent and comprehensive social media policy.
This type of course helps our law students prepare for practicing in the real world," said NSU Shepard Broad Law Center Dean Jon M. Garon. "New technology is essential for success in law, but these tools must be used with careful consideration of professionalism, ethics, and data security obligations."
Wall recently launched Social Media Law and Order, an education company created to deliver presentations, seminars, webinars and educational resources on all subjects relating to social media and the law.
Prior to founding Social Media Law and Order, Wall practiced social media, Internet and intellectual property law at Richman Greer, P.A. where he quickly became widely recognized as an authority on the effects of social media on the law. Wall authored three books on the effects of social media on the law, including "Fire over Facebook: A Primer on Protected Social Media Activity in the Workplace", "Best Practice Guide for Managing Employee Social Media Use" and the "Social Media Guide for Lawyers, a legal guide on how lawyers can practically, ethically and effectively use social media in their practice."
Wall received his Juris Doctor cum laude from the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, where he currently serves as Vice President of the Alumni Board of Directors, and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies with honors from the University of Central Florida. He is a member of the United States Supreme Court and The Florida Bar.
