Wheaton Activists: We Need School Choice, and We Have No Time to "Spare"
WHEATON, Ill., Jan. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Wheaton community has planned a bowling event to celebrate National School Choice Week. West Suburban Patriots and The Heartland Institute are putting a good spin on expanding educational options in suburban Chicago by hosting a Bowl-a-Rama on Sunday, January 25, 2015.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend the event, which will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Wheaton Bowl.
Kids will be able to bowl and learn the official National School Choice Week dance while parents can hear from State Representative Jeanne Ives on the topic of working with legislators to advance school choice; the event will also feature a screening of "The Ticket," a school choice documentary short.
"A one-size-fits-all approach to education doesn't work for every child. National School Choice Week is held yearly to support education options, so every child has a great education opportunity," said Carol Davis, founder and coordinator for the West Suburban Patriots.
"The Heartland Institute is proud to again be a part of National School Choice Week, especially with our friends in the West Suburban Patriots," said Jim Lakely, director of communications at The Heartland Institute. "Education policy needs to focus on the needs of children and parents, not teachers, union reps, and administrators. Giving parents a choice is a vital first step toward real reform of our education system."
National School Choice Week (January 25 – 31, 2015) will be America's largest-ever celebration of opportunity in education. Featuring more than 11,000 independently organized events across all 50 states, the Week shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for children. National School Choice Week is independent, nonpolitical, and nonpartisan, and embraces all types of educational choice – from traditional public schools to public charter schools, magnet schools, online learning, private schools, and homeschooling.
