What Makes a Great Teacher? A Great Teacher.
MILL VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Have you ever wondered what makes a great teacher? While persistence, passion for your subject, and a desire to help others all play a role, one of the most important elements is undoubtedly the influence of another great teacher.
For the 2018 Teachers Test Prep "Pass the Torch" Teacher Scholarships, aspiring educators were asked to tell the story of a teacher who influenced their life. The eight finalists, chosen from among 665 entries, clearly reveal that having an inspirational teacher was not only a key factor in their decision to become a teacher, but had a significant impact on the type of teacher they hoped to be for their students.
Inclusiveness was a key focus among the aspiring elementary educators, with three students intending to work in special education. Once teased by her classmates for being small, Chela Baisas from Virginia wants to ensure that all students feel connected through kindness and encouragement. Shukura Burrell from DC aims to help struggling students find their own individual voice. Pennsylvania finalist Mack Griffith aspires to create classrooms where every learner is valued. Meanwhile, inspired by the enthusiasm of her music teacher, Katelyn Novak from Tennessee wants to pass on her passion to her own students.
Diversity emerged as a prominent theme among the future secondary educators. Through a career in math education, Texas student Ontario Brown hopes to help marginalized young men overcome social stereotypes and redefine success. Katherine Harrison from San Francisco herself challenged social conventions by returning to university after 22 years as a homemaker. San Diego finalist Lucero Martinez Cisneros believes in the importance of fostering cultural pride yet not being limited by cultural expectations. Ryan James Ritzes from Maryland is an impassioned advocate for the power of positivity, a lesson he learned from his old theater director.
Teachers Test Prep founder Robert Duncan states, "While the eight finalists are very unique, the one thing that unites them all is their strong desire to make a difference, thanks to a teacher who inspired them. That's the main reason we established these scholarships: to help great future teachers 'pass the torch' to their students."
The two winners will be announced on October 1st. Each winner will receive $5000 to offset school and living expenses so they can spend more time focusing on preparing to become a teacher.
